General Fence Installation FAQs
General frequently asked questions about fence installation in Oklahoma.
Do you install wood fence posts?
We do not install wood posts. With the extreme weather, wind, and climate changes associated with central Oklahoma, it is inadvisable to install wood posts. In today’s market, the difference in cost is minimal vs. the value and time you get from using steel posts. We may make an exception when specifically asked or for highly custom specialized fence projects.
What size are the rails do you attach the pickets to?
Our “stick-built” fences and our panel fences are all constructed with 2″x4″ rails. We DO NOT use 2″x3″ rails.
Do you install pressure-treated fence panels?
We do not install or advise you to install any pressure-treated wood for fencing in central Oklahoma. This type of wood is pressure-injected with liquid chemicals straight from the mill. The fence will look nice initially, but once the liquid evaporates, sitting in the Oklahoma sun…leaving only the chemicals. The wood tends to bend and warp severely, leaving you with an unsightly fence line.
What gauge steel posts do you install?
We use commercial grade schedule 20 posts for wood privacy fence installation.
How far do the galvanized steel posts go into the ground?
Our galvanized steel posts are buried approximately 30 inches into the ground. Almost 3′ deep.
Can I use my existing steel posts?
If your current posts are on perfect eight ′ centers and are straight, we can install your new fence on them. However, if your steel posts are off-center, leaning, or are a thinner grade of material. We would not recommend you reuse them. Fence OKC cannot warranty any materials we did not provide during installation.
What is the thickness of the pickets you install?
Our standard picket thickness is 5/8″. You do have an option to upgrade your cedar pickets to 7/8″ thick. Our 7/8″ thick Western Red Cedar pickets have smooth and rough sides. (Ask your fence professional for more details.)
What's the difference between a panel-built and stick-built fence?
As long as either fence is built and installed correctly, they will both do the job they were intended to. Our cedar and Doug Fir panels are made inside our warehouse in a controlled environment using electro-galvanized nails. When pre-built panels are installed, there is less on-site labor, and your project will take less time. More labor is involved when we custom stick-build your fence since we build it one picket at a time. This will give your fence a proper custom fit on your land. We can adjust the space between each picket to suit your needs, and the most crucial difference is we use coated decking screws to secure each picket individually to the 2″x4″ rails.
What is the difference between Doug Fir and Cedar?
Doug Fir is a more economical option. It has a typical lifespan of around 7 to 12 years. Cedar is better quality and typically lasts about 15 to 20 years. This means you perform preventive maintenance on your fence, such as staining, weather sealing, etc. The lifespan of either material can be diminished or lengthened depending on the weather patterns it endures over the years.
How tall of fence may I install?
The most common size of wood residential fences we install in central Oklahoma is six ′ and eight ′. The most common chain link heights are four ′, five ′, and six ′. The most popular ornamental iron heights are four ′ (mostly around pools and back fence lines that butt up against common areas such as golf courses, parks, and lakes). Ornamental iron also comes in 5′ and 6′ heights. You can go higher if building codes and requirements allow you in your area.
What's better, chain link or ornamental iron?
Chain link is the most economical of the two. However, chain link does not add any value to your home, whereas ornamental iron is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
How long will my new fence last?
Depending on the type of fence you have installed will determine how long it will last. Vinyl fencing, ornamental iron, and chain link will almost last a lifetime. Wood-type fencing can last between 8 to 20+ years, depending on the type of wood and how it’s cared for over its lifespan.
Which way will my gate swing?
In most instances, gates will swing out towards the picket side of the fence. However, we can have the gate swing in either direction.
Does a fence require any maintenance?
PVC, vinyl, and chain link fences are maintenance-free. Wood fences, such as cedar and spruce require minor maintenance depending on the appearance you desire. We will always recommend you stain or seal your wood fence to prolong its life.
